Cable Sizes – AWG & Stranded

Selecting the right sized cable is critical for the  correct function and safety of your manufactured product. You need to ensure the cable conductors are sufficient to carry the required current without overheating. In addition, you need to consider the level of voltage-drop over the length of the cable and, the longer the length of cable, the more voltage-drop will occur. In general, selecting a cable slightly larger than you require will yield better performance. Many publications detail cable sizes in the American Wire Gauge (AWG) format which is also know as Brown & Sharpe wire gauge (B+S). For your convenience we have attached a Chart showing AWG sizes to stranded wire size conversion (courtesy of our main cable supplier Tycab Australia). The Chart also includes a formula for working out the square millimeter conductor area (mm2) of a cable. If you need help with selecting the right cable for your product please contact Wiring Solutions for assistance.
